Let us help you decide the right platform for your businesses needs and goals
We have broken down website platforms into 3 main types.
- Website Builders – Simple website builders like Wix, Squarespace, Godaddy, and Shopify make it super easy to create a website within hours with very limited customization options.
- WordPress – WordPress is also technically a website builder but it is very powerful and has thousands of plugins to do just about anything. This is the path that most professional websites choose because it allows you to customize much more than simple website builders.
- Raw Code – Lastly making a website from scratch by writing code is also possible but it can be very difficult and will require professional maintenance to ensure it is secure and that it meets SEO and accessibility requirements.
There are 2 main types of hosting plans depending on the needs of your business.
Technically websites are free, what you end up paying monthly for is “hosting” this where your website will live after it’s created so that it can be accessed 24/7 around the world. There are great companies like Bluehost & GoDaddy that offer robust hosting options, great customer service, and competitive monthly pricing.
- Shared – A single server is shared between several users and multiple websites. This is the cheaper option of the 2 and is perfectly fine for most business and personal applications. You share the bandwidth between all the other users and traffic at any given moment.
- Dedicated – This option is more expensive and basically give you your own private server for just your website. This is important if your website has hundreds or thousands of visitors daily or if you’re conducting several financial transitions daily.
What do you want your website to accomplish & how do you do it?
- Who is your competition?
- Who is your target audience?
- What are your brand attributes?
- What is your reach; local, national, global?
- What actions do you expect from visitors?
For some businesses the goal of their website is pretty simple and straight forward, for others it can take some strategizing. Doing a quick Google search to find your competitors is a great place to start and get ideas of how they built out their websites. By doing some SEO competitor analysis you will be able to discover which competitors are actually winning online and what they are doing right. Its also important to set
What pages will you need, how will they connect & how will they be laid out?
- Sitemap – A sitemap starts out as just a visual representation that lays out all the pages of your website and any links to other internal recourses or pages like an interconnected web. It is then later converted to an actual file that will accompany your websites files so that search engines like google and Bing can quickly identify all the pages of your website and index them properly to consider them in search results.
- Wireframes -Wire frames are basically visual rough draft drawings to represent what each of the pages will look like. You can be as detailed as you would like but its just to have a representation of the basic layout you are wanting. For example knowing where images and content will go as well as buttons, icons, and menus. You can also include some color or you can do that later if you haven’t decided.
This is an important part of website development and is often overlooked by amateurs and even professionals. Depending on your preference the site map and wireframes can be done by hand on paper or there are several free tools available online that work wonderfully. We personally like to use Diagrams.net but there are many others.
What do we talk about and how do we say it?
This can be one of the most challenging steps involved in website creation. Sometimes it’s a good idea to outsource the content creation but with some dedication and research it can be done easily.
- Engagement – Dull, repetitive, and “fluff” content makes it difficult for visitors to stay engaged. Keeping your content thoughtful and intentional will keep your visitors engaged on your website long enough to take action.
- Typography – Typography deals mainly with how written text is displayed and digested. If you have ever wondered why there are so many fonts available this is the reason. Using different fonts with varying sizes and weights makes consuming written content pleasurable and can solicit certain emotions or feelings from you visitors.
- Structure – The layout of your content can make it much easier to digest. breaking up larger paragraphs into smaller ones and positioning them in and around photos, videos, or icons will greatly enhance your visitors experience on your website. Having proper and consistent spacing or dividers between the various elements also plays an important role in maintaining user engagement.
- SEO – Search Engine Optimization is by far one of the most important factors of content creation. SEO not only refers to the specific keywords and phrases that must be present in your content but also how it’s labeled with the HTML markup of your website. Keywords that you want your page to rank for should be closer to the top. Headings and sub-headings are the main places that Google and other search engines look for these keywords. They are identified by using an H1, H2, or H3 tag in your HTML.
- Meta Data – Images and pages have input fields for meta data, be sure to complete both Title & Description fields with relevant keywords to assist with SEO ranking and Accessibility standards.

How does it look?
Just like typography the colors and textures you choose can also communicate certain emotions or feelings. If you are doing any type of branding then working in your brand color set should be priority. It can take a bit of back and forth to find what looks the best. If you do not already have a specific color set there are several online resources to help you find them. We like to use Colors.co
- Hex Codes – Most website builders will have a color picking tool that should let you input a 6 digit hex code. This alpha-numeric code will translate to a very specific color palette. You can then set the specific hex codes that make up your color scheme as defaults for quick access as you are modifying the website pages.
- Accessibility – Accessibility is the practice of tailoring your website for those that are handicap. Color choices among other things can play a very important role this. Having a background image or color with content in front of it that bleeds into it can make it difficult for screen readers that the visually impaired use to navigate the internet. This can also effect your SEO score so be sure that your color choices can be easily seen on screen.
Is everything working?
Once you have all your content, media, and links in place and you are happy with your website is always a good idea to comb through it one last time and maybe have someone else take a look at it. Be sure to read everything and click all the links to make sure that its all connected properly. In case you didn’t during the content creation step make sure that your headings and sub headings have the proper H1, H2, & H3 tags.
- Check Links – Checking links manually can be time consuming so we like to use this LINK Checking Tool to validate all of the links on a website. Keep in mind it will only check links that have been made and verify it reaches a valid page. If you forgot to add a link to a button it will not let you know so going through and clicking everything is still good practice.
- Responsiveness – Make sure that the website is responsive in desktop, tablet and mobile formats. This can usually be done from within the website building platform you are using but it can also be done by just changing the horizontal size of the window you are viewing your website in. Make sure that everything looks as appealing as it does in the desktop version and adjust accordingly.
- Check SEO – While getting ranked at the top of search results can take some time and require additional work there are several things that you can verify that are ok with your website that could negatively affect ranking. Use this free SEO Optimizer tool to do a quick scan of your website and identify any red flags that can be fixed before publishing your website.
- Analytics – Embedding your website with an analytics engine can give you great insights to who is visiting your website as well as how long they are on it and several other characteristics about your visitor to help with targeted advertising or just identifying your audience better. You can create free Google Analytics account and follow the steps to add it to your website.
- Deployment – If everything checks out you are ready to publish. Here is a more detailed article by Webflow with a pre-launch checklist. Once deployed your can verify it by simply navigating to it in a different browser or device.
- Indexing – Google and other search engines will eventually find your website and “crawl” it so that it can be indexed for search results but this can take weeks or months. By using the Google Search Console you can invite google to index it right away!
