Black Hat
Black Hat SEO – Black Hat SEO is basically any method or technique that is not recommended or discouraged yet can still positively affect your rankings on SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages) at least temporarily. Some of these methods can be more detrimental than others to your SEO efforts as Google spots these trends and modifies their algorithms to counter act the efforts. It’s a constant effort of cheating your way to the top that can have irreversible consequences.
White Hat
White Hat SEO – White Hat SEO tactics are the way to go in the long run. It’s very similar to the story of the Tortoise and The Hare, slow and steady wins the race!
As more and more people use the internet Google among other search engines track every move we make. Google has come a long way since the days of dialup. Sticking to legitimate proven techniques and best practices will, over time give your website a high authority score.
Not all “Black Hat” techniques are bad when used in moderation.
Content Submission
This can be anything from news & research websites, forums, blogs, basically anywhere you can contribute meaningful content without coming across like spam and leaving a link to your website or one of its relevant pages. At the very least if entering a link is not allowed just mention your businesses name.
Press releases are another great way to submit content especially if there is something worth mentioning that is happening in your business like a grand opening, under new management, sale or clearance event, presented an award, or any community involvement. Press releases are submitted and it’s up to the publisher to release it to the public.
Unlinked Mentions
If you come across something online that mentions your business or website and it does not have an active link, reach out to the person who posted it with a URL to where its located and kindly ask that they include you websites URL in place or in addition to just the mention.
This is hard to come by accidentally so doing some thorough searching on different search engines and social media (web 2.0) platforms should hopefully uncover something. Try making it a regular practice to search for these unlinked mentions every month or so as it could take some time from the time it was posted for it to be indexed and shown in a search result.
Resource Pages
Similar to what we have done here with SEO, you too can make a resource page. If you are able to thoughtfully create a page full of useful resources that you feel others would find value in, you can share the link with others and see if they would link to your resource page on their website as a place to obtain valuable information relevant to something they are talking about on their website.
For example if someone was making a website about how to start and run a successful business you would imagine SEO should come up at some point or at least having a website. When you find a place that you believe could benefit from having your resource page mentioned on their website just reach out to them and make a suggestion. You would be surprised how often this works!
Collaboration
Collaborating with others online is essentially what drives the internet. This can done by writing a blog post on another blog and asking them to one for you in return or by conducting interviews with others that are related to your industry. Sometimes these can be accomplished for free and other times there will a request for some sort of payment either way it doesn’t hurt to reach out to influencers and other online entities that are relevant to yours and ask if they would be interested in collaboration. In some cases it can become an ongoing relationship as long as it remains mutually beneficial.
Ensuring the content you create is valuable and resemble spam will make this effort worth your time or financial commitment.
Broken Links
Broken links often occur when people change things on websites. If you come across a blog posts, online articles, or other website that has a broken link that should have linked to something similar to what you have on your website just reach out to the website owner and request that it be replaced with one you provide them.
If you really want to get the most out of this method you can run whats called a backlink audit on any of your competitors. Once you have a list of all of their backlinks you can check that referring domain to make sure that the link is still working. If its not then you just found a place where you can recommend one of yours!
Backlinks
Before we get into backlinks it’s important to understand what a domain authority score is. An authority score is usually depicted as a number between 1 and 100. 1 being the worst and 100 being the best. All websites pretty much start at 1 and some gain authority faster than others. The score itself is not as important as how it compares to your competition. If your authority score is 60 but all of your competitors are at 50 then you are king of the hill and should be happy!
Backlinks are pretty much the life blood of off page SEO. A backlink is created when a link to your website is found on another website or online platform and capable of being indexed by google or any other search engine provider.
The more the merrier is not so much the case with back links. The real value of a back link is derived from the place it is found. For example if you were a automobile aftermarket parts manufacturer and your website was mentioned on a major vehicle manufacturers website like Ford. That single backlink could generate more authority for your website than 20 backlinks from other random can enthusiast forums or blogs because of ford authority score in comparison to the others. It all comes down to relevance and authority scores with back links.
Citations
A citation is essentially a listing in a directory. If you have a local business you probably have whats called a “Google My Business” listing like we do. This allows your business to be found locally on Google Maps. There are other listing sites like bing, apple maps, yahoo, yelp, and so on but Google’s is by far the best.
Having additional listings helps with your authority score because it reinforces your presence online. When google and other search engines find those listings it counts in your favor. It has been found by researchers that after 25 listings it is no longer advantageous and could be considered a waste. Furthermore what’s more important than having multiple listing citations is that they are all consistent . This is referred to as the NAP consistency. Name, Address, and Phone number consistency across all listings is extremely important.

ON Page Techniques
Keyword Research
Keyword analysis is not as easy as it sounds. They can be single words or phrases with multiple words. Long tail keywords are almost sentences and are very specific. It can be much easier to rank a loner keyword than a shorter one.
Finding the right keywords for an SEO campaign is a combination of words that describe what your webpage is about and what people are actually searching for. They are not always exactly the same.
The relevancy, placement and frequency of these keywords on a given page will make the largest impact on your Search Engine Optimization.
Competitor Analysis
Competitor Analysis allows you to gain insights into your competitors. These insights include things like the specific keywords that are getting them ranked as well as the word count of there webpages and the mount of backlinks referring to them and plenty more but those are the big ones.
Before doing any serious SEO work it is highly recommended to conduct competitor analysis. Without it you will just be guessing at what works and hoping to get lucky. Depending on how competitive or niche your industry is gaining insights into what is working will at least give you a fighting chance.
There are free tools that can help you with this like SemRush, Spyfu, and SERankings.
Symantic Structure
Websites are primarily made with markup (HTML), styling (CSS), and logic (JavaScript) programing languages. There are several others and frameworks as well but for SEO purposes the markup language HTML is the one that has to do with semantic structure.
Every element on a webpage has an HTML “tag” identifying what type of element it is and its characteristics. The different elements of a webpage consist of things like titles, headings, subheadings, paragraphs, lists, images, and videos. Each one of these elements has a “tag” associated with it. When indexing sites like google or bing visit or “crawl” your website they are looking for these specific tags and what is located within them.
When it comes to SEO they are using the content or keywords found within your title, heading, and sub heading tags. These will appear as <H1>, <H2>, & <H3 > tags within your HTML markup code. Using the right tags in the appropriate places with your keywords will allow your website to be indexed properly so that you can start showing up in search results eventually.
Most website builders will try to place the correct tag in the right place but its not a guarantee and should be double checked.
Cross Linking
When you have a website with multiple pages, it’s good practice to have links throughout it linking to the other pages. This makes it easier for web crawlers to index your website and allows for a much better user experience for someone visiting your website. Even though there is most likely a navigation at the top and bottom of the website its still a good SEO practice to include them anywhere you can. Make sure not to over do it, they should be intentionally placed and not over used.

Accessibility
Ease of accessibility has recently become an important SEO feature as more and more people with handicaps and disabilities are able to use the internet. Many devices and technologies are now available that read webpages and deliver them in various formats. Making sure that you have text that stands out against photos or background colors is one of the major ones. Making sure that the website is easy to navigate and read is the bulk of it. Meta data and alt text are also major factors that are discussed with more detail in a later section.
Responsive
Have you ever wondered why some websites look different on your computer vs a tablet or mobile phone?
Another major factor in SEO is ensuring that your website is mobile responsive. Most website builders today allow you to toggle between different view modes to see what it will look like on each device. It can take some tweaking but your website should be accessible in all 3 viewing modes.
When designing websites for the most part it is recommended to build them with the mobile view as a priority because this how most people are viewing websites these days. Some websites have so much functionality to them that making them mobile responsive can be challenging or even impossible. but for most business applications it is usually not a problem.
Metadata
Aside from the actual content on your website metadata is a series of mini-communications between your website and search engines. Similar to HTML element tags they act as descriptors to web-crawlers and indexing sites.
Metadata is typically not visible on a website. It is information that is attached to elements for readability by web crawlers and indexing sites for SEO purposes. It basically says more about your content than the written visible content itself. For images and other types of media there is also “alt text” or alternative text. Alt text is more for accessibility purposes but it includes text that is either displayed or read aloud when the image or media can not be seen for whatever reason.
Having too much or irrelevant metadata can be a flag for search engines so don’t be to descriptive and keep it relevant to the element at hand.
